Iron Dog 2014

#1 Post by john »

It's that time of year again.

The Iron Dog starts Feb 16th and is scheduled to end in downtown Fairbanks on Sat Feb 22nd.

We'll need some help staffing the office during the week of Feb 16th through the 22nd. Jody and Steve have staffed it in the past and will be doing so again (Thank You). However, it’s a lot of hours for two people and some additional help would sure be appreciated.

Trail work will begin during the week of Monday Feb, 17th or sooner.

We have six (6) basic trail sections this year:

1. Tanana to Nenana on the Tanana River;
2. Tanana River from Nenana to the Mouth of the Chena;
3. Tanana River from the Mouth of the Chena to the Flood way Dike at the Flood Control Project;
4. Across the Flood Control Project to the Chena River by the dam and North Pole Fuel Point;
5. Chena River from the dam to Nordale Bridge;
6. Nordale Bridge to finish line.

What we would like to do is start setting the trail. The second section should be OK and we'll check it out during the FST's Sweetheart run, Feb 16th. I may bring some stakes along mark the hazards we see.

If we can get the other sections tracked on Monday through Wed of race week, then run it all on Friday or Saturday (finish day) and set stakes.

Ideally, we could use a minimum of 5 crews of at least two each for each section.

What we have so far for trail crews by section (please email ASAP if this has changed)

1. The National Guard is sending out a team to run this section and stake it on race week. Jeff Dyer will also be running this section to help support the guard.

2. Steve Nolan and Paul R. have volunteered to stake the first section. We'll also make sure the track is set on the FST sweetheart run Feb 16th and may stake any hazards we see.

3. Need volunteers for this section. I'd like to start running on Feb 8th to get a track set.

4. Steve and Nicole will be staffing the Fuel Depot during race day and helping with the staking through the Floodway. The fuel depot will be set up on Saturday morning. The racers may be let out an hour or two earlier then in the past, so we may need to be set up and ready by 9:00 AM.

5. Need volunteers for this section. Again, would like to start running on Feb 8th to get a track set.

6. Nordale Bridge to finish. This section is being covered by Jeff Dyer and company.

FYI: Jeff Dyer is a member of the Iron Dog Board and also a local Fairbanksan.

Please let me know if you’re willing and able to help out. This is our sport and your help is very much appreciated.

I'd also suggest you all check out the new Iron Dog web site, its pretty slick and has a section for volunteer registration.

Thanks

Thanks Jason,

I always try and get more than one person on a team, so no problem.

I'll add you to my email list for volunteers and we'll go from there.

Steve and Jason, thanks for showing up. We'll get on it and finish Thursday.

Temp cut off, as a rule no, but it is suppose to be warmer Thursday and Friday.

Had a nice 30 below on the floodway this morning...

Anyone else see the Daily News Musher (Miner) article about Todd Minnick and Nick Olstad winning the Iron Dog, did you catch where they called them "Mushers".

So all you sledheads are actually Mushers, betcha didn't know that :shockedeye:
