May board meeting minutes

The May board meeting opened in the Library at 1801 on 1 May. Board members present were Peter Vredenburgh, Tim Berg, Steven Enoch, Jim Miller, Myles Thomas and Paul Renschen.

Peter asked about the Cleary Summit ramp. It is not usable where it is. Pleasant Vally would like it. Peter and Jim have trailers big enough to move it if it will slide. Peter will see if it will slide.

Peter started a long discussion on an outreach to Ft. Wainwright. The consensus was that it should 1) start with a letter to the commander asking for his support, 2) ask to use the Outdoor Rec building for safety instruction, 3) ask to use Outdoor Rec's machines along with FST member machines for guided rides on the Chena River. If the program works well at Ft. Wainwright, we should repeat it at Eielson the following winter.

Jim led a long discussion on the gas pipeline.

Steven: For the Snowmelt Potluck; the pond is opening, the ducks have arrived, the snow is gone and the parking area is clear.

Tim: We should do a ride from murphy Dome to Tolovana Hot Springs next January.

Jim: There are interesting 4-wheeler trails up north around Livengood. Riders need a saw, winch, extra rope and hip waders.

Steven: There are good 4-wheeler trails on Ft. Greely but there are also unusual hazards.

The meeting adjourned at 1935.

Just to help with the snowmobile stuff on Ft Wainwright. 1) the commander is all about getting the Soldiers outside to do things. 2) Outdoor rec does safety classes twice a month during the winter so people can rent the sled from outdoor rec. The classes are free. 3) It cost between 90-130 dollars to rent the sled for one day and you have to have the safety course plus you have to rent the trailer to haul the sled. I have talked to a bunch of Soldiers about snowmobiling and a lot of people would rather get a 4-wheeler versus a snowmobile due to fact the in the lower 48 most Army bases are in the South.

Jewell and I are willing to help get more Soldiers involved in snowmobiling. Jewell works for the Garrison Commander. Another program on post that may be an avenue to try in the BOSS (Better Opportunity for Single Soldiers).

Just some insight and thoughts

Jason,

Could you join us at one of our board meetings this summer to give us more of your thoughts? We usually meet on the deck at Pikes in the summer.

Jason,

How about on the few ATV rides we do in the summer as well.

July 4th at Valdez Creek would be a good one to get them involved.
