Caribou lake ride

#1 Post by alaskasc »

Me and Dan made a run down to Cantwell today and rode into Caribou lakes down the jack river. The trail was great and well established , but we had flat light. Got to the end of the jack river and no trail was cut in to get out, so we guessed and were off a few feet. The sun came out here and there so we explored around the area. Found a bowl with untouched snow and it was awesome for the hour and a half before the light went away. It was a little sunny on the way out. It was about 15 miles in one way. We saw 6 people ice fishing and a family of 3 riding around. 57 miles overall.

Pictures to follow.

This would be a nice day trip next year. We could ride in, ice fishing for those who want (lake trout), BBQ, explore for both trail riders and mountain. The valley is about a half mile wide back there. Great family ride.

Thanks Mike for the report. I will plan to lead a ride next year to this area. It was a great trip. If the trail is broken in, any snow machine can make it to Caribou Lake. During this ride, we saw two small herds of caribou, and five moose. We took a snack break at the lake and watch/visited 3 persons fishing. In a 15 minute span, we saw them catch 3 lake trout and loose one. The fish look to be in the 12 to 15 inch range. Once at the lake, the riding skills can range from beginner to advance. Dan
