ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- A 31-year-old Valdez man is dead after getting caught in an avalanche Monday afternoon.
It happened near mile 28.5 of the Richardson Highway in the Thompson Pass area outside Valdez.
Jesse Tol and his father were snowmachining and skiing when Jesse went to check snow conditions and the snow gave way, according to state troopers. Troopers say the slide was about 500 to 700 feet long and 200 yards wide.
Both men were caught in it though Jesse's father did not report any injuries.
A heli-ski crew helped in the rescue, transporting Tol to an Emergence Medical Services crew. Tol was pronounced dead on the way to the hospital.
